Quality: Trying to hold on…

rosy memories
Have you noticed lately how so many things are made to NOT last?

Like lots of relationships, jobs, products…

It’s no big shock that people are afraid of marriage these days. I mean every day we hear about someone breaking up with someone he or she supposedly loved.

And don’t get me started about the permanence of the job market (or lack thereof).

Should everything come with a tag that says —

“Made NOT To Last” ?!

After living for over a quarter of a century, I’ve come to appreciate
quality,
or maybe I should say –
things that last (or at least last in my heart).

They’re hard to hold onto, but here are some things that remind me of the quality of my life:

A vintage valentine my dad gave my mom
(reminding me that true love exists, so I’ll keep looking)

Rachel, my BFF who understands me completely
(time and space never get in our way – we’re always connected)

a single perfect rose I saved by turning  it upside down
(from my dad when I played Jenny Lind in “Barnum” in high school)

My vintage St. Laurent lace up boots
(designed by Yves, handed down from my GM to my mom to me)

a beaded colorful hand knit blanket that I’ve had forever
(made by my babysitter who we nicknamed Eclectica)

My vinyl collection
(I prefer the memories of the vinyl, even with the scratches)

Original Toll House cookie recipe
(They take me back to a place I really miss)

yummy memories of Mom

yummy memories of Mom

How do you hold onto what matters?
What are you saving forever?

Pretty nice post. I just stumbled upon your blog and wanted to say that I have really enjoyed browsing your blog posts. In any case I’ll be subscribing to your feed and I hope you write again soon!

  • I think the fleeting nature of things is exactly the reason we should all live in the present and really value what we’ve got in front of us, respectively.

After all, there’s no time like the present. And even if the past or the future look really good, the present is something you can engage with… right now! 🙂

Well said! And I luv that you’re rocking your dreams not only by valuing what’s in front of you, but preserving everything so we can all join you on your journey. Keep going. We’ll follow your lead. : )

  • It is always nice when you see something funny. Laughter is useful and should always be used in large quantities. Laughter is health and is feeling good and when it is truly is caused by a positive moment.

SO true. Wish we could hold onto laughter so we’d have it when we need it. Imagine if we could package it. We’d be gazillionaires!
(your site looks great – wish I could read it – thanks for coming to my blog)

  • I’m scared to death of marriage for that very reason. Can love really last forever? I would like to think so, but can I bank on that? I save soo many things. Old notes. I dry most of the flowers I receive. I keep every journal I’ve filled. And I make sure to print off millions of pictures. I like to look back and reminisce and be reminded how blessed I am.

    Really enjoying your blog. 🙂

Re: marriage – I am still a believer in true love. Rare but possible. And you’re exactly right about why we save things. It’s our way of holding onto blessings. I really enjoyed your OPEN ROAD post and know what you mean about all of the people you pass in daily life. Whenever I hear an emergency siren during a celebration I remember that life is filled with happy and sad going on simultaneously.

What do you think?
