FINDING THE FUNNY IN L & D

Labor & Delivery... an interesting place

Labor & Delivery… interesting…

Hospital Stories —

Wednesday afternoon on my ER Shift, a British woman, “preggers with twins,” comes in to deliver. As I wheel her upstairs, I ask if she’s nervous and she says — with out-stretched arms —

I’m a little scared about being strapped to the gurney during my C-Section!

Whaaaaa?!

Apparently her friend who had twins (at another hospital) told her that she had to be restrained during her procedure. So I say —

Uh, no – not in this hospital – unless you’re a mental patient.

She laughs —

Well that explains it!

COURAGE: Humble Heroes on a Train

three brave men on a train

badass! beyond hot!

Courage is something I think about a lot. As I’ve often said, we don’t know if we have it till we need it. So I’m in total awe of the fearless few who stand up for the rest of us in the face of enormous danger — like Spencer Stone, Alek Skarlatos and Anthony Sadler who tackled and disarmed a suspected Islamist militant shooting an AK-47 on a packed, high speed train bound for Paris on Friday.

Averting a massacre —

Missing TUSCANY from A to Z

My body is in L.A. but my heart and soul (and the last of my euros) are stuck in Tuscany.

It’s impossible to “A to Z” all of the amazing memories. They simply can’t all fit into this post.

Arrivederci Tuscany — sigh…

A Different POINT OF VIEW

seeing things differently

We all see what we want to see. Our PERSPECTIVE or POV is our reality. And it’s a unique reality, because we look at things in a way that is different from the way others do. Yeah, obviously we see some things in common, and generally associate with others who see things sorta the way we do. But when it comes right down to it: “It is what it is” to each of us and not exactly that way to everyone else.

Sometimes we get stuck in our own POV and it keeps us from growing or moving on. My Dad always says,

Put yourself in the other person’s shoes.

This helps for the few minutes you’re concentrating on it. But we tend to revert back to: “yes, but….” mode, and the drama continues…b Read the rest of this entry »

Staying Open: DECISIONS AND DOORS

The ONLY VOICE to listen to is YOUR OWN.

The voice to listen to is YOUR OWN.

Listening in the ER –

It’s last night and quieter in the ER than usual, so I have time to actually get into a conversation. I select a fellow-Pisces, an about-to-be-high-school-graduate, who’s sitting in Triage, waiting and looking nervous.  Alone in her own thoughts, “Isabella” has been stressing about college, where to hang out after the prom, and whether or not she’ll get home in time to finish the semester project she’s put off till the last minute — typical senior problems.  Oh, and she’s worried about her mom getting treated somewhere in the ER.

I go in the back and find Isabella’s mom in Subacute getting stitched after accidentally slicing her finger, instead of the bagel she was preparing for the child she nannies.  When I come back to Triage, I reassure Isabella that her mom’s doing fine and is in good hands (Dr. A’s.)  So Isabella decides to focus her freak-out on picking the right COLLEGE.  I mean, what better time to concentrate on such an important decision than when you’re in the Triage waiting area, surrounded by screamy-meemies, bloody bits, and patients and family members growing more and more impatient, right? Pilot Season 2015 – 2 Early Trends (They don’t include me!)

Trendsetter!

Trendsetter!

It’s Pilot Season again: Yay, there’s OPPORTUNITY, but UGH I don’t fit the profile. White Blonds are an endangered species this Pilot Season! Seriously, this is NOT a joke!

PILOT SEASON is DEFINITELY INTO DIVERSITY —

Sure it’s great, and a long time coming, but  it’s a trend I can’t figure out a way to be part of.  In 2015 CDs are looking for leads that don’t look like anyone else.  Ken Jeong will be playing a version of himself in ABC’s autobiographical “Dr. Ken.” (wish there’d be a medical comedy about about my life!) Whoopi Goldberg will co-lead opposite Jermaine Fowler in CBS’s multi-camera comedy, “Delores & Jermaine.” Mike Epps will be Uncle Buck in, yep you guessed it, ABC’s “Uncle Buck.”  Orange is The New Black’s Laverne Cox will play a transgender attorney in CBS’s “Doubt.”  Paula Patton (I loved her in Precious) will play a woman whose perfect life is torn apart on ABC’s “Runner” while Aunjanue Ellis will be going coming from The Help to needing help in ABC’s Terrorist Thriller “Quantico.” Behind the camera, Selma’s Ava DuVernay will be going from the big screen to the small screen for CBS’s civil rights drama, “For Justice.

And — it’s almost as if I’m experiencing REVERSE AGEISM,  because in 2015 —

Fifty Shades of ROMANCE

female instinct

basic instinct

Yes, I saw FIFTY SHADES OF GREY and yes, I read the books – all three of them.  Now I’m reading the email alerts and headlines about the almost 70% female audience helping to break records and movie-success-myths.

I’m no movie mogul, but my advice to you if you are is: If you’re “scouring best-seller lists looking to find the next Fifty Shades of Grey,” consider the fact that the “almost 70% Female Audience” might be flocking to the film not because it’s about SEX but because it’s about ROMANCE.  (Wouldn’t the Audience be a higher percentage of Males if the main focus was SEX?)

HOPELESS ROMANTICS

As a female (who likes sex, btw) in the target audience, it seems pretty obvious to me that at the core Fifty Shades is really about a shy, smart girl trying to get a handsome, unattainable guy so she can have her happy ending (the old-fashioned kind, ahaha.)  It’s wish-fulfillment we all can relate to.  I can!
