Acting Tips on What to Wear

Clothes Matter

The Right Wardrobe is important–

in Films & TV (that reflect Real Life)
in Auditions for Films & TV (that reflect Real life) and
in Real Life.

First impressions

matter. Looking appropriate matters.
If you look like you can do the job, people believe you can.

We’ve all seen what NOT to wear.

It has taken me awhile to understand how to dress for Auditions. It’s not about buying something new every season (a white button shirt never goes out of style.)

It’s about
accumulating key pieces over time,
knowing how to put them together,
and working them for every situation.

Katherine Heigl Looked Hot in Glasses & Sweats
when she auditioned for Grey’s Anatomy.

So remember to NOT try too hard.

Fashion Pieces – For TV Pilot Season & Life–

1)Black stiletto pumps
(high enough of a heel that they make your legs turn heads but not so high that you topple over mid-read.)

2) Black or grey pencil skirt
(for modest lawyer looks/business woman looks.)

3) Black mini skirt
(for “sexy” lawyer/business woman looks — also works for your average “CSI” audition.)

4) White button down shirt
(or any simple color/pin stripe — something professional to pair with the skirts.)

5) Flattering black pants
(sometimes you need to be taken more seriously.)

6) Black blazer
(works with the skirts, the pants, the button down, or jeans and a cute camisole — basically it’s always a good idea.)

7) Fitted black tank or tee
(for the police officers and hot superheros.)

8) Sexy button down
(something a little more fun and feminine than your average button down — one you can dress up or down)

9) Heeled boots
(to pair with jeans to give you that head-turning leg, without making the mini skirt statement — they also up any outfit a tad.)

10) Ballet flats
(sometimes you get that more bookish, wall flower character that doesn’t need to be 6 feet tall.)

11) Fitted crewneck sweater
(a good basic to have when it’s cold and you want to keep the outfit simple — good for the doctor roles.)

12) Pretty camisole to wear with jeans or under the blazer with your skirts or pants
(a touch of silk & flirty.)

13) Slim fitting jeans
(just skinny enough that they make you feel great.)

14) Converse & sweats
(once in awhile you’ll see “think Ellen Page” in the breakdown – a little grunge, a little tomboyish.)
