Finding our Way (with a little help from our friends)

I’ve noticed that I spend a lot of my volunteer shift just helping people who are lost find their way out of the hospital.

Our ER is in the East Tower but on Sunday nights there’s only one Information Desk open and it’s in the West Tower, so the hospital tries to get everyone who’s entering and leaving the hospital to do it in the west. So in the east, they dim the lights and block the exits, but all that means is — people are walking around totally disoriented in the dark. (OMG! I so know how they feel.)

Strangers are always surprised and appreciative when I help them find their way.  I guess we all kind’a wish we’d have someone show us the way…

Last night it was a little dead in the ER because of Super Bowl Sunday (apparently no one has an emergency during a big game.)

I got to talking to Mira, the sweetest Volunteer EVER — about my AUDITION PHOBIA because I’m always too much in my head (Evie, Casting Directors are just PEOPLE) and not free enough to do my best work when I’m in “the room.”  I used to be better at it when I didn’t care so much, but now I try too hard and it shows. Ugh!

Mira says that when she’s feeling too pressured, she gets her mind off of herself by doing something for someone else. In fact, she says every night before she goes to sleep, she goes over in her mind how many good deeds she accomplished that day (she’s beyond a “good karma girl” right?)

When I questioned how she manages to do random acts of kindness every day, she looked at me like I was nuts.  She’d already written to a supervisor at Verizon to tell what a good job a tech had done.  all this and she still had time to make cookies for the ER staff before her shift. Impressive!

When I asked what kinds of things make her feel pressured, she pointed to Jacob, the cute Paramedic wheeling a patient in, and her face turned several shades of red (poor Mira, so obvi). So I yanked her into the ladies’ room and did a mini-makeover, using the make-up in my pocket.

Tomorrow when I’m waiting to be called into the casting room, instead of thinking of myself, I’m gonna remember how big Jacob smiled when Mira walked out of that rest room, all cute and confident with her hair swept to the side and her lips lined in Rouge Coco.

Uh-huh we all just want to have someone show us the way…
