Favorite Traditions

Just when I start to think true love doesn’t exist, October 14th rolls around to remind me that it does.

I love celebrating my parents’ anniversary.

You might think it’s a little weird that Dad and I do this alone, but Mom’s always with us anyway. Even though I was little when she died, I have so many amazing memories of her through him.

Every year he takes me to a cool new restaurant –
tonight it was BLT Steakhouse, really nice –
and he always tells me a story I’ve never heard before, which is amazing considering how many years he’s been telling me stories. (As soon as I’m alone, I retell every single one to myself so I’ll never forget any of them…)

The One About Melinda

This time he told me about how, when he was dating Mom, she found out he was also dating this girl named Melinda at this travel agency. So Mom kept sending Melinda chocolates at work a few times a week, but anonymously, which made Melinda chubby — and chubbier and –

and See's candy is the hometown favorite...

– you gotta see Dad tell it, it’s really all in the gestures – he’s hilarious and I’m giggling and just as he wraps the story with how he broke it off with Melinda, the waiter brings us a plate of hand-made chocolates – an on-the-house surprise for the anniversary he heard mentioned!

Thanks Mom, glad you could make it.

  • […] Minutes later when  Dr. A dabs numbing cream on his wound, the kid yells, “Owww!” So I SHUSH! him about giving away the code word and he actually giggles – PLUS I get a trying-not-to-smile-but-I-can’t-help-it from Dr. A! So it’s a win/WIN of epic proportions! (My Mom would be so proud!) […]

  • […] Thank you… Mom… for all of your signs to FIND THE FUNNY through the madness and missteps —  and for giving me…COURAGE (gulp!) to deliver the MAGIC – […]

  • Evie:

Thanks Clarie, nice of you to say so — do you still have your mom around? Give her a call to say ‘hey’ today… you never know when you won’t be able to.

  • That has got to be one of the most awesome stories I have ever heard.
The last line definitely made me smile: “Good one, Mom.”
